The Notebook is a 1996 American romantic novel by American novelist Nicholas Sparks. The novel was later adapted into a popular romance film by the same name in 2004. However, the movie and the book have very different endings.
The story begins with Noah, an 80 year old man, reading a story from a notebook to a woman in a nursing home.
The story brings them back to 1936, in the calm and beautiful town of New Bern, North Carolina. Noah Calhoun meets a young woman named Allison (Allie) Nelson at a carnival, and becomes interested in her. After convincing her to go on a date with him, Allie and Noah begin to grow closer and fall in love that fateful summer. However, as summer comes to an end, Allie must move back home, leaving Noah. He writes to her for a year, with no reply...
Noah, 31, returns from the war finishes the restoration of his plantation-style home after his father's death. Allie sees the house in the newspaper and decides to pay him a visit.
